Glass Christmas Ornaments

Had so much fun making these beautiful glass Christmas ornaments with a friend of mine Laura Larsen.  She was so excited to come over to teach me a craft she said! I had such a great time,  they were so easy and fun and well look at them!

AMAZING!  Here is how they are made,  you purchase those plain glass ornaments, then some alcohol based re-inkers.  We used this little brush hand stamper that had felt on the end of it.  You put three different drops of the ink on the felt stamper and start stamping on the outside of the glass ornament.  It dries quite quickly.  Then you take Pearl-X  powder and put on the inside of the ball to coat it and give it a matte look.
 They are just so pretty!
Thank you Laura!  Such a fun craft and day!

Here are the brushes we used,  you can find them on amazon or your local craft store` They are by Tim Holt'z

    2. #Artchick. Thank you for this great tutorial. I have a suggestion for your followers: if you are not familiar with a product you could check out a website and look up the product. That's how I learned. A great website is Tim Holtz and/or RangerInk.com. Tim Holtz has some great alcohol inks and felted "Ink Applicators". That's what what they are called in case you need to ask for one in a store. ; )

  3. I have worked with Alcohol Inks a lot. I tried this process with the glass ornament balls and a dabbler. The color just turned dark and had none of its vibrancy. You could not see a color much less a blend. What am I doing wrong? Would like to see a uTube where you are making one. Please advise. Thanks

    1. You are adding too much ink. Drop alcohol on the dark parts and wipe away if needed. I just drop my colors on and let them swirl naturally rather than blot them

  4. I tried and it went to one dark color not the blends as alcohol inks usually do. Any suggestions?

  5. You say you put PearlX powder inside the ornament. What did you either mix the PearlX with, or coat the inside of the ornament with first?

  6. I don't know about the pearlx powder, but other tutorials have said to coat the inside with white acrylic paint to make the colors pop.

    1. Its a powder you find at the craft stores. You just drop it in and swirl it around and it coats the inside of the ornament. Much less messy than using the acrylic paint. But I'm sure it works fine too, I have just never tried it that way. I think the colors are quite vibrant with the pearl x

  7. I've successfully made these. Coat the inside of the ball with liquid floor polish (drain the excess) then put in some glitter (or pearl ex powder) and roll it around to completely coat the inside. Do this first. Then when you dab on the alcohol ink it has something to reflect off. The glitter is subtle when covered with the ink. Choose at least three colors of ink and place on the felt covered applicator tool (I used a thread spool, glued the sticky side of Velcro to the top, then cut felt to fit). It doesn't have to be large. Daub the inked felt all over the outside of the ball. Allow to dry. Add more layers, even different colors to increase the depth, drying between coats. Can also blow the wet ink with a straw or canned air for a different effect. Spraying with fine mist of alcohol also is interesting.

    1. #Kathy. Great suggestions and explanations! I'm sure you've gelped a lot if people. Thank you for your imput. I love to spray with alcohol. I use a straw dipped in alcohol. I like the big drop look. Loved your thread spool dabbler! I can tell you are an artist!

  8. These are great, but you need to coat the inside of the ornament with white paint first, or the colors will NOT be vibrant. I do this with all see through material. It really makes a huge difference.

  9. I make these every holiday time, and you have to pour white paint on
the inside first. I pour paint inside and coat the whole thing. Then I
set them upside down to drain out the extra paint. I wait a couple of
days to let them fully dry and then I start the fun part.

    2. #unknown. What a great suggestion! I want to try a pearlized white. I love the pearl effect. That's why Artchick uses Pearl Ex (found at JacquardProducts.com)

    1. I haven't tried plastic before, I'm wondering if the paint will adhere to the plastic or if it will streak

    1. Nancy, It is like a little sponge brush on a a stick! google it or look for it on amazon. We have them here locally at our craft store called Ben Franklin's

    2. You can use the round make up remover cotton wipes as your applicator with the alcohol inks. I have also used pieces of felt attached to a handle such as a Tim Holtz set of handle with Velcro and the felt pads. So much fun and so many different options. I also like to put the alcohol ink on the inside and use canned air with quick sprays away from you. Have fun.
